Europeans got acquainted with black furniture at the beginning of the colonial era, when black lacquered tables and cabinets began to arrive from China. Objects covered with carvings, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and ivory, served as decoration of aristocratic houses.

What styles to use
For centuries, black has been underestimated in European culture. Perhaps this is due to the tradition of wearing black as a sign of sorrow, although this fashion did not always exist.

In eastern countries, the attitude towards black did not change; there he is still considered the embodiment of wisdom, nobility and sophistication. In Europe, the fashion for black revived at the beginning of the 20th century, after which it became a sign of luxury or a business setting.
The color is used in the decor and furniture of most styles that have taken shape in the last hundred years: minimalism, modern (art deco), hi-tech. It is an indispensable component of the Scandinavian and retro style. You cannot do without it in an interior with a Japanese or Chinese flavor.

With the right approach, black furniture can be entered into any room, including a nursery. Even one dark item looks decent in different styles. Combination with the color of the walls
Until a few decades ago, the favorite combination was black furniture in a white interior. Today, a simple black and white scheme is considered insipid, boring and boring; it has practically ceased to be used even in minimalist interiors.
An exception is made if original furnishings are used in the black and white scheme. An accent can be an unusual shape, and not necessarily pretentious, like products in an oriental style. Alternatively, you can opt for items with a light finish.

It is noteworthy that a variety of tones are suitable for the role of “stabilizers”: neutral light, delicate pastel, rich and rich tones. The following cool shades will serve as a good background for black furniture:
- Blue. Blue walls are one of the best ways to draw attention to a dark subject. Against a blue background, even a bulky chest of drawers or wardrobe takes on an elegant look. To make the interior look lighter and fresher, it is diluted with light colors. Glossy furniture will be set off by pale pink, lavender, vanilla, olive. Matte items are paired with muted shades of brown.
- The gray ones. Cool light shades eliminate unnecessary contrast, so light gray, sandy walls will be a suitable backdrop for black furniture. For accents, you can also choose cold tones: amethyst, turquoise, tiffany. Shades of wood, ocher, straw are suitable for gray-beige walls.

Black furniture has a more complicated relationship with warm colors. Not everyone likes the combination with red and orange (the exception is specific interiors, oriental or art deco).
- In this regard, creamy, golden, mustard shades are lucky. Against the background of such walls, the furniture will have a noble look. To get a decent result, warm shades should be made as light as possible, and furniture, if possible, should be chosen as graceful, with smooth contours.

Wallpaper
Often an interesting result can be obtained by using patterned wallpaper as a backdrop for black furniture, especially if the item has a simple (modern) shape. To make the interior dynamic, the following recommendations should be taken into account:
- Wallpaper with floral or geometric prints (often dark, Victorian). Create a subdued, respectable atmosphere. To make the room look simple, the palette is diluted with bright colors, be it textiles, a chandelier or carpet.
- Wallpaper with large floral ornament. Refreshes the dark interior; it acquires a touch of romance.
- Combination, when one wall is covered with patterned wallpaper, the rest are plain. The technique works well if the pattern on the wallpaper is emphasized geometric. An alternative option is to divide the wall horizontally, when one part remains white, and the other is pasted over with wallpaper with a pattern.
- Bright colorful wallpaper or photo wallpaper. An interesting, non-standard interior can be obtained.
On the question of the color of the floor
For black furniture, the question of choosing the color of the floor is strategically important – the lighter it is (up to pure white), the brighter the room will look. The same principle applies here as for white furniture on a subfloor – a contrasting combination enhances the impression.

When decorating the interior, you should not chase the number of dark objects; let it be one, but an original black armchair or an elegant chest of drawers with curved legs. You also need to pay attention to the surface, glossy or matte. Glossy items get more attention, but they also need frequent maintenance. Matte furnishings are not as defiantly luxurious, but they look better in an interior with a muted, natural palette.
